I had the pleasure of speaking with the author of the book "Restitution",
Kelly
Clark at his cabin June 27.
The following is a paraphrase of our conversation. Some of the words are not
exactly as spoken on the phone, but as close as I can remember as we were
both on cell phones, and not near computers for typing !
For more details about his story and his book, please visit the info page
here.
D.W: K W ! "Good to hear the voice behind the words... so tell me,
about you..is the story in the book yours?"
K.W.: "Hi Dave, nice to hear you too ! The story of Restitution is my
story to a degree, and combined with some other facts and fiction as well."
D.W: "Well, I have to tell you, I have read it twice now, and it's
really very good. Tell me where it all started?"
K.W.: "The story was conceived during the last 30 years ago as I
drove my truck throughout this country. Much of it is based on factual
experiences I have had throughout my life, and some if it is not. (DW: I
won't go into specifics about the story line, but when you do read it, you
will be able to understand better).
The constant for me during these years, and 5 million miles of driving, of
course, has been the music of Uriah Heep.
All during my travels, I have mentioned Uriah Heep's music at the stops I
make, to the people I meet, and in the years I have been driving, I have
been able to amass a great deal of fans along the way !"
D.W: You're a Heep fan just like the rest of us then...
K.W.: Yep ! There is no other music like it..Mick Box is the guitar
god.
Heep is the best. !
D.W.: How far do you go back with them?
K.W.: Since 1972 or so.. I saw them in concert, and they have been
with me ever since. There was a period where I sort of lost track of them...
D.W.: " You know... you're like many, many of us out there...ardent
fans who lost them for a bit in the 80's, but found them again and now
are as strong as we were way back... go on please..."
K.W.: "In the 80's, like I said, I sort of lost track of them, but
when Sea of Light and Sonic Origami came out, I knew they were still making
music, and still playing live. It was a great feeling to know that they were
still out there!
The book is something that has been formulating all these years, and I
started writing it in 2001. It changed a little bit as I was writing it
because of some events that happened in the world.
D.W.: How did you find a publisher?
K.W.: It's self financed. I have been promoting it on the road as I
travel.
D.W.: So you're STILL driving for a living?
K.W.: Absolutely ! I drive during the week, and am home on weekends
most of the time. I have been on radio stations, have held book signings,
and am in the process of conceiving a Television ad. We'll see where that
goes.
D.W.: This is fascinating... ( I asked K.W. at this time to tell me a
bit about what really was real in the book, and what wasn't. We went through
a few of the chapters, and he explained a few item's to me that I won't
reveal here...you'll have to read it to see.)
So, if your driving, so you ever get through Ohio?
K.W.: Yes.. I go through Ohio quite a bit actually.
D.W.: Well then, we will have to meet up !
K.W.: I would like that...
(We have scheduled a time and place to meet and talk Heep and his book for
the week of June 28)
D.W.: I think that your story is something that a great many people
can relate to, and I think that it's a must read for a Heep Fan. Have you
seen the other books by Dave Ling (Wizards and Demons), and Jeff Perkins
(Born to Perform) ?
K.W.: Yes..I have read them, and they are very well done !
D.W.: You sent me a copy for Mick Box, and I will take care of
mailing it to him as we discussed. By the way... do you know what
Heepventions are?
K.W.: Yes ! I might try to get to the one in North Carolina
D.W.: Well, we'll talk about that when we meet up... maybe we should
jump in your rig, and go together?
K.W.: I was just thinking that... it's about 9 hours from where you
live... 9 hours of Heep, good times on the road, and it'll be a great trip
!! I would love to attend... can I bring some books?
D.W.: Definitely looking forward to that ! (I then called Ron Mann,
and informed him of these events... we just might make it there !
D.W.: (After about 45 minutes on the phone (Well, my battery is
beeping, so I better let you go.. Hey... when we meet up this week, how
about I video you for a bit talking about Heep and stuff, and we'll put it
on the website?
K.W.: That would be fun ! Let's do it...
D.W.: Sounds like a plan to me. Listen, take care, and thanks for
spending the time on the phone. I'll look forward to meeting up this week,
and grabbing a few beers with you.
K.W.: Sure thing... I know a great place out by you that we can meet
up at, and I'll even bring the Heep CD's in case the juke box doesn't have
any !
D.W.: Done deal..
